In Howl's Moving Castle Sophie is the eldest of three girls and she is destined to have quite a boring life while the other sisters go seek their fortunes. She lives in Ingary, which is a magical land where "anything can happen and usualy does". She goes to visit one of her sisters on May Day and most of the men are drunk and trying to catch dates, then a man walks up to her and she runs away. While she is in charge of her stepmother's hat shop(a few weeks later) the Wicked Witch of the Waste curses her and turns her into an old woman. Sophie can't tell anyone she is under a spell so she goes to Wizard Howl hoping he will notice that she is cursed. He doesn't and asked her why she was there and she said that she was his cleaning lady. Many strange things happen including a swap of poem and spell, a strange hopping scarecrow that is very scary, and a deal with a fire demon. Near the end there is a suprising twist and a romantic ending.
